I have a panasonic SD9 i have files recorded to 1080i AVCHD. Id like to resize to a smaller res. However, what ever format i use the outcome never looks as nice as resizing the original 1080i whilst its playing Why is this? The video has alot of motion (cam on a bike)

The only success i have had is going from avchd 1080i to avchd 1440i This maintains the sharpness, which just disppears between frames completely in any other format.

    Any ideas people?

Other formats use different compression methods.

Also "resizing" changes the information that is available to be displayed. If you are also lowering the bitrate that will lower quality as well.

When you change the resolution in the same format there will be less degradation. Especially since you are still staying in the high def res range.

    What is your destination?

Are you going to a portable device like an ipad or zune or droid phone? Are you making a dvd or a bluray?

You should adjust your expectations to the destination format. If it can only display sd resolution hd won't look as sharp as when it was in its original hd format.

It seems the same no matter what bitrate i select in other formats even if its mahoosive lol.

Is there anyway to use avchd at custom resolution and bitrates?

My aim is to just have smaller videos for archiving and youtube uploading, very important stuff will be left a is. I understand that avchd uses h.264. If i try output it h264 even at crazy bitrates, my sharpness is lost.
