    Have an old, Trusty (up until now) Toshiba V853UK VCR I've been using with my freeview box for many years.

    I've just reattached the video after being given a PVR to try for a few days. I've connected everything back as it was and it seems to have thrown a wobbley. The symptoms include;

    Not picking up the date and time from the analogue/Teletext TV signal.
    Retuning picked up all the analogue channels but doesn't pickup the channel name, just marking them as ST1, ST2 etc
    When pressing the 'SAT. MON' and 'SAT. CONT.' functions on the remote produce the message "FEATURE UNAVAILABLE ON THIS MODEL'
    Have tried manually setting the time and date which doesn't resolve the issue.
    Playback of known good videos is very very poor almost like the tracking is very much out of alignment.
    No sound on analogue TV, just the picture.
    Putting the VCR to AV2 (Freeview box) just generates a good quality picture with no sound.

    It seems the VCR has gone to some sort of simple mode. Of course Toshiba's helpline is now closed. I have double checked the connections. Is there anyway to do a Hard reset or alike so it loads its factory settings?

    Problem resolved in 2 steps...

    Step 1.

    With the TV and VCR switched on, press and hold the 'A.DUB' button on the remote control for about 10 seconds (Until 'TEST' appears on the display on the front of the VCR)

    As soon as this shows, press and hold the 'MENU' button on the remote for about 5 seconds.

    On the TV a grid of numbers should appear, using the cursor keys on the remote highlight the following numbers by moving round the grid of numbers and pressing 'OK' on the remote to toggle selecting or unselecting.

    For the V853UK, I selected;

    3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 23, 25, 26, 29, 32, 33, 39, 40, 41, 46, 48, 49, 50, 52, 53, 60, 61, 62, 63, 72

    When complete press 'MENU' on the remote control. When PLEASE WAIT has finished flashing power down the VCR.

    STEP 2:

    After doing step 1 I tried recording but I had a white band along the bottom of the screen as if the tracking was out. I phoned Toshiba but they would only divulge the information if I was a Toshiba Engineer. Looking on the net I found this which resolved the problem;

    Put in a good quality pre-recorded video and play it.

    While the video is playing, press an hold the 'A.DUB' button on the remote control for 10 seconds until 'TEST' or 'CODE' is displayed on the front of the video recorder.

    Immediately press the 'SL/LP' button on the remote control. This will reset the videos picture settings.

    Put the VCR into standby.

    Job done!

    I have done a trial recording off my freeview box and it works perfectly
