By testing, I have copied a AVCHD disc with a regular PC DVD burner. However, it is not playable in a SD DVD player. Is it possible to play the AVCHD disc with the regular PC DVD drive and software?

not as an authored disc , but you could play individual .m2ts streams as a data disc

You won't be able to play an "AVCHC" file structure in any DVD player, only some (most current) Blu-Ray players.
You can play the m2ts files (in BDMV/STREAM folder) with MPCHC and probably some other PC players.Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.
