  1. I have a Sony DCR-TRV520 today but loading a tape is getting sketchy now. It can take 12 attempts at closing before it actually loads. Thinking it's time for a new one.

My own bias, based on absolutely nothing, is something with an actual hdd inside but I'm interested in recommendations regarding what to look for in a camcorder.

I'd like to keep it under US$500.
Still pictures would be great if the resolution is high enough.
At least an hour capture time with whatever media is available to it.
Removable media would be good (does that rule out hdd's then?).
Compact but usable (the older I get the less steady I am...).
Long battery life; happy to use viewfinder to record rather than LCD display to conserve battery.

I can't think of anything else offhand.

I'm fine with buying online but I find that if I can buy from Costco I prefer to.

    Thanks.
