  1. Today I saw that DIVX 5.0 has been released. I was wondering if anyone that has tried out the new codec could give some feedback. Quality/file size/processing ability are the points I'm looking for.

I'm also looking for thoughts on the DIVX Pro bundle. DIVX folks claim the DIVX pro does alot to enhance the encoding process, they even include an encoder in the Pro bundle. Great news, they offer it for free, but the bad news is that it takes $30 to turn off the Gator-based ad/spyware.

    TIA!

See some of my posts, I have a little test done with this codec and a few of the popular ones. As for Gator, you need to run Lavasoft Ad-aware to remove Gator. But I would not remove everything if I was you

What do you mean? If you remove gator will the DivX pro encoder detect it and turn itself off or something? Please explain. Thanks.

Please don't ask for hacks in here

Yes if you use adawear and let it remove "All" of cydoor then DivX 5 will stop working. Do a search on Grokster for "Noname.zip"

    keywords:
grokster kazza cydoor spy noname divx dvd vcd

I like it better than 4. It encodes faster and has more options, if you use the Pro version. It doens't seem to encode on the fly as well as the previous version, though. That's probably due to higher compression rates, which push my CPU too hard.

Other than that, it produces higher quality files at smaller sizes.

I tried going the Adaware route, but the codec wouldn't work after I removed GAIN's software. I went ahead and spent the $30, since I'll be using the codec a lot.

My impressions of the codec are quite the opposite... I've been able to raise resolution and use some additional features offered by DivX 5 in real-time encoding. Most importantly, the quality of the captured files has improved quite a lot when using the same bitrate which I used to use with DivX 4.12. Now already capturing at 528x576 (PAL) resolution and only getting about 0,05% dropped frames... roughly the same I'd get without any compression.

How fast is your CPU? My system is pretty much tweaked to the limit, right now. I'm running a 1.1ghz AMD, overclocked to 1.17ghz. I think it's just because my CPU can't handle the encoding on the fly.

I got a 1,2GHz celeron overclocked to 1,5GHz. What settings are you trying to capture with? I'm using the following: 1200kbps ,slowest, 8,2,2000,10,20, PSV at Strong (only to reduce filesize, causes few artifacts).

Don't see a lot of difference between 4.8 and 5, apart from gator

Still it wont hurt to keep the decoder, someone is bound to use it on the movies.
