  1. I have a Phillips DVP5992 (same as 5990) that has served me well for some time. In the last week or so I've had two DVD's (The Boys Are Back & Up in the Air) that apparently confused the player into getting the track numbers wrong.

With the first movie it was funny and confusing because the movie had some flashbacks and time-jumps, so at first we weren't sure anything was wrong, but then the end credits played half-way through the movie. I hit the "display" key and it clearly thought it was playing things in the right order (ie it thought the end credits were track 12 but then played a track from the middle of the movie as track 13).

We decided it was a defective disc, but then it just happened again with another DVD (these are commercial DVDs, not home-burned). This time I tried going to "scene selection" but when I tried to select Track 2, it refused to play Track 2 and just skipped to Track 1 instead. I switched the disc over to my HTPC, and it played fine, in proper order.

I have a DVP5992/37 and I've flashed it with firmware version 31 (a long time ago). The region code is hacked successfully to play all regions.

The latest FW is version 32 now, right? Has anyone seen this behavior? Should I flash the newer FW? Is the player likely dying? I've watched other discs successfully in between the two that had the problem.

    Any advice would be appreciated...

  2. So, maybe I've fixed the problem with a FW flash, though I'm a little unclear on whether the flash worked properly.

I downloaded DVP5990_37_vb6_v32_CD_Logo.rar from VB6ROCOD's mediafire link. I un'rared, ran the .exe file to enable volume changing from the +/- buttons, burned the .bin file to a CD+RW disc. I got the "upgrade disc detected" message and hit Play on the remote. The disc tray was very quickly ejected and the player restarted. OK, so far so good...

I know it did something, because the new logo shows up. But when I check the FW version, it still says "37.08.51.31" - I was expecting the last 2 digits to change to 32. Was that wrong?

Anyway, when I put "Up in the Air" back in the player, it plays the tracks in the correct order, with no apparent problems.

So the problem seems to be fixed, but I'm not sure whether I've successfully upgraded my FW or not.

    ideas?
