  1. Hey Everyone,

    Everyone body knows that high definition videos/movies is the best, right? RIGHT!
    I have a few animes that are in (.mkv) format with soft-subs. I'm trying to mux them all into (.avi) and be playable with the PS3.
    But for some reason I couldn't play the file.

    ============

    Why do you want to convert them to (.avi)'s?
    PS3's can't play (.mkv) files, but it can play (.avi) files.

    But the PS3 doesn't support soft-subs!
    PS3's can play DIVX/XVID soft-subs using a program called AVIAddXSubs. Yep, it's true

    That is why I'm trying to convert/mux (.mkv) to (.avi) without losing any video quality, and so that I can have subtitles WITHOUT! Re-encoding

    .::MY FAIL METHOD::.
    So this is where I started my journey, to find a way to play animes with soft-subs without re-encoding/losing quality on the PS3
    =========================

    1) Extracted (.mkv) files using MKVExtractGUI2.
    2) Converted the H.264 (VIDEO) to (.avi) using avc2avi.
    3) Converted the AAC (AUDIO) to AC3 using Xilisoft Video Converter Ultimate 6.
    4) Muxed the VIDEO and AUDIO together using VirtualDUB MOD.
    5) Used AVIAddXSubs to add in the subs.
    6) Ending result was a (.divx) file...good good
    =========================

    Watched it on the computer (Didn't see subtitles, that's normal) the video and audio...all in tact.
    Placed the video file in a usb and turned it on the PS3...
    >>ERROR!<<
    The PS3 said...
    "The Data type is not supported. (800288C0)"

    Here is a MediaInfo...info?
    This file I converted the AUDIO to 5.1 AC3.

    This is not an anime show. It's a Movie sample that I download off the internet.
    It was in (.mkv - 720p). Still did not work on the PS3.

    Anyone have any ideas why this method didn't work?
    And any ideas to make this work o.o?
    Please keep this thread up. I haven't seen many threads that is about soft-subs movies and on [ANIME/TV SERIES] MKV --> AVI (PS3).

    I don't believe the PS3 supports AVC inside an AVI container (Or a .divx container, which is just a hacked AVI anyway).

    I generally stream non-natively playable material to the PS3, so subs aren't an issue. For AVC 720p material I usually use MultiAVCHD to create a compliant AVCHD format, which the PS3 is happy with, and which supports soft subs etc.

  3. Thank you for the reply

    Hmm...so the PS3 doesn't support AVC inside an AVI container...
    So the only way for the PS3 to support the AVI container is to encode the AVC to something else?
    That would mean a loss of quality...
    So I guess the method I'm using now is to be put aside.

    I'm also guessing that you're streaming by using PS3 Media Server or TVersity?
    I was wondering if we can copy the "Transcode" videos to the PS3 HDD.
    But I hear it can go up to 90gb's +

    Thank you for the tip with the AVC 720p video.
    But can this also be done with a 1080p?
    I'm guessing yes.

    Yes. AVCHD supports all valid resolutions, from 480i upwards.

    Note, however, that most mkv files are not valid resolutions (including your example), because they have been cropped during encoding. Valid resolutions are 1280 x 720, and 1920 x 1080 (or 1440 x 1080). 1280 x nnn, where nnn does not equal 720, means a re-encode is required.

    Eventually you may find it is easier to get a separate, more capable media player, such as a WDTV or similar (I have one, as well as the PS3)

  5. Thank you for the information. Never knew about the AVCHD program

    Guns1inger, is there any other way to play a video file without losing it's video quality with subs?
    There should be a alternative way then re-encoding the whole video again.

    ::EDIT::
    Looks like there was no audio after I converted/mux/idk with AVCHD.

    ::EDIT::
    I found the reason why...

    ::EDIT::
    Maybe not...
