I dont want to reencode, I got mkv I want to just mux this data into avi container, for esier editing in virtualdub. I have ffdshow and h264 vfw compresser so I can smart render in vdub. I have been searching the forums and insternets for days and all I can efer find is ways to reencode.
My camera makes avi files with mp3 video and aac, and it edits great in vdub.
Please help! Avimux cant do it, it only seems to alow mkv output from mkv source, and avi from avi.

You could try ffmpeg or a gui for it like xmedia recode, open the mkv, under profile choose custom and format avi, and then under the video and audio tab choose video copy and audio copy.

OK I finally tries this and have no success. What I get for an output file has audio and just black screen. I try extended virtualdub open and forced the fourCC to H264 (which is the ssme one my camera uses and works great) and I get the same result. Tried opening with directshow and the same result, black video with correct frame size though. Any other idea? And would anyone like a sample video I have that does work with H264 in avi into virtualdub to compare it to?

There is no such thing as "mp3 video".
Avimux cant do it, it only seems to alow mkv output from mkv source, and avi from avi.
together with a standalone (demuxed) .AAC file.
P.S.: IF necessary:
--- extract the H264 stream to a standalone .264 file
--- use avc2avi
--- run AVI-Mux GUI (again).Last edited by El Heggunte; 6th Sep 2010 at 08:15.

An H264 stream with several consecutive B-frames won't play fine in an AVI container.
So you have two possibilities:
Reencode without using B-frames or
Don't use the AVI container for H264 but MP4 or MKV. -

Heh, I did not mean mp3 video, i meant h264 video and mp3 audio, in avi.
A razil do u think the tota; b;ack frames I am getting are bein caused by too many consecutive b frames? How many is oto many, 2 in a row or 3 or more?
Also I ahve since learned that smart render will nto work for this you are right, but I would still be pleased with direct sctream and cutting on keyframes alone.
As for the audio I was in error, the files I have actually are ac3,a nd I have ac3 acm installed and working good.
I will try what El Heggunte said and report back. Thanks guys. -
One last thing I should ask, could anyone recomend an editor, preferably freeware like virtualdub, that will do frame acurate cuts with smart render from these files? If not freeware, then suggest retail software to do it. Desired features wuld be to be able to snap to kepframes the way virtualdub does for quick scanning through the video. Wuld need to be able to acept mkv input but it would not bother me if it could not output mkv, but it must be lossless, or smart rendered output files.

Another thing id like to try. Videoredo will accept transport stream with h264 and ac3, which is the data I ahave. What program would mux me this? I checked out xmedia recode and it only alows for mpeg2 in transport stream.
