  1. I have Virtual Dub running in Frameserver mode, and it's placing subtitles. I set up Virtual Dub, it asks for a Frameserver name, and the name of the .VDR signpost file for AVIFile handler. I give it that and everything works fine.

However, I can't get Tmpgenc to recognize a file to process into the mpg 2 format. I can't get it to recognize anything that the VirtualDub frameserver is providing. When I open Tmpgenc, I don't use the Wizard. I make the settings (for mpg2 SVCD), and then try to select a video and an audio file. I have set the Frameserver to filename.avi. Then I try to set Video Source of tmpgenc to filename.avi, but I get an error
    "c:\dv\filename.avi" cannot open, or unsupported

Will someone please describe how I can (if it does doe this) use tmpgenc to use the frameserver of Virtual Dub?

  2. You should use DVD2AVI as framserver, thats so much easier.

make sure your frameserved file is file.vdr.avi not just file.vdr

    See http://www.vcdhelp.com/virtualdubframeserve.htm for more details.

  4. potential problems:
lower priority of directshow compatibility reader under options/environmental settings/vfapi

vdub aviproxy mode will interfere with vfapi(dvd2avi, aviutil, tmpgenc) frameserving; run \aviproxy\proxyoff.reg to disable

use .vdr ext instead of .avi(specify *.* all files in open video dialog box)

  5. May God in Heaven send tender mercies down on to your soul... Stanwebber, your post solved a problem that's been making me tear my hair out for hours.

I still can't figure out why TMPGenc loved the Vdub frameserver when it was sending it "South Park," but refused to work for "Simpsons."

    Freakin' Philistine program...

In any case, you've helped me greatly. Thanks!

  6. I'm trying to do the exact same thing (subtitles through VirtualDub, starting the frameserver, and using tmpgenc). Thanks for the tips, but I'm still getting the error in tempgenc when trying to open the .avi (or .vdr) file... "file cannot be opened or unsupported."

I've done the proxyoff in VirtualDub (and restarted Windows).
I've tried saving the frameserver file as .avi or .vdr.
I've tried two versions of tmpgenc (2.53 and 0.11.x).
I've tried moving the DirectShow Compatability (Tmpgenc/Options/Environmental Settings/VFAPI) up and down the priority list.

So far, nothing has worked. Any other ideas, please?

    Thanks much!

I have the same problems..Tested a' lot of Versions of Tempgenc.
I tried .vdr.avi or vdr extensions. But No...file not recogniced or bad...
Then I encoded the avi to a' New avi.....with subs .In Virtual D.
    40 minutes....
And then opened the avi in Tempgenc, to convert the avi to mpg.

I read in TEMPGEnc's Homepage/forum that versions after 2.0, doesnt support frameserving??? True or false?

I have worked with all TMPG versions since beta12. All versions accept frameserved (by VD) files. So far I did run Win98, ME and W2K. The frameserver works!! Leave the proxy mode alone, at least if you work with VFAPI too. If you use one of the newer versions of TMPGEnc and VirtualDub, save it as *.vdr, not *.avi. Play with the priorities of the VFAPI plugins.
    Actually stanwebber said everything above.
Honestly I am tired so see the "frameserver does not work" topics. Why the hell don't you use an easier to use frameserver? (e.g. Avisynth )

  9. try disabling the direct show compatibility reader altogether(uncheck box)

  10. I was having the same problem, none of the solutions worked...which was puzzling because I used to be able to do this! Anyways, I was attempting to join two avi files together and add subtitling, so I could make three SVCDs instead of two. When you start the frameserver, make the avi file name something different than the files you are frameserver. Once I did that TMPGenc worked like a charm.
