copying video files from PC to IPod Touch

I have several .mpg video files on my PC that I would like to play on my new IPod Touch. When I try to simply drag the files over to the IPod Touch I get a warning basically stating the file cannot be played on the Touch, I assume due to the file format. Can someone point me to the best tool for converting .mpg video files to an IPod Touch?

Handbrake has several 'Pre-sets'.
One of them is 'iPhone & iPod Touch'.
So this will probably do the job.

Handbreak is focused on conversion for Apple products (iPod, iPhone, AppleTV) plus h.264 MKV for the general case. Nice thing about Handbreak is it accepts most any format including HD m2t, mts and tod.

Others are focused more to Xbox, PS3 or other phones.

If you do use handbrake, you have the choice of which video codecs to use.
Either MPEG-4 or H.264(x264).
x264 is the better codec. It gives small files with good quality. It uses a lot of CPU power though. So it will take longer to convert.
But if you are more interested in speed rather than quality then go for MPEG-4. The results will still be OK.
