Re-encoding with Xvid will only reduce it's quality and basically be a waste of time. Xvid is an open source version of mpeg-4 part 10 (?), with Divx being a closed source equivalent. So they are essentially the same thing, and for many players, interchangeable.

What information do you expect to see after conversion that you do not see now, and why is this information important ?

  3. Your Divx video is probably over compressed already. Recompressing with Xvid or any other lossy codec can only make the quality worse.

  5. Divx is a commercial implementation of the MPEG 4 Part 2 specification. Xvid is an open source implementation of the same spec. I think Xvid is a little better than Divx. But the difference isn't huge. The only significant difference between the two is that Xvid uses three warp point GMC, Divx uses one warp point. Some Divx/DVD and standalone media players support one warp point GMC but I'm not aware of any that support three. You probably shouldn't be using GMC anyway.

  9. You can change a Divx file into an Xvid file by changing the fourcc with something like fourcc code changer. Basically there's no significant difference between Divx and Xvid as far as playback is concerned.

Reencoding shouldn't change the frame rate or smoothness of playback. If it does something is going wrong.

I'm not sure what you're trying to do. If you want just want to change the codec identified in the file header, try
    AVI FourCC Code Changer.

You don't have to re-encode the audio ; you're not watermarking the audio

Just use audio => direct stream copy

  13. If I recall correctly, AVIRecomp will allow you to add logos and subtitles.

It will encode to XviD and use the original audio, in fact all you need to tell it, is what size you want the output file to be.

  15. Yes, Virtualdub is great, which is probably why AVIRecomp uses it.

AVIRecomp is a just frontend for VirtualdubMod and AVISynth which takes much of the hassle out of recoding an AVI.

  16. For VirtualDub i found a way of using preset information - it really do the work quick .... Though if there is superior software with ease to understand than VirtualDub to give much better quailty and time .... since I know much about VirtualDub through researching it for few months.
