  1. Hi there!

I've got a question which bothered me so much that I joined this forum! I hope that you guys can help me out.

I've got a couple of mp4 videos which I want to play on my dvd player. As far as I know, mp4 is the same as divx except not open source. My dvd player can play divx which all summed up comes to this questions: Am I able to play a mp4 file on a divx dvd player without converting it to a vob etc. ?

    Thanks a lot :P

  2. MPEG 4 is a specification that includes many things, including MPEG 4 part 2 video encoding (Divx, Xvid) and MPEG 4 part 10 (h.264, AVC). MP4 is a container. It can contain either of those. Your DVD player can probably play MPEG 4 part 2 video in an AVI container, probably not in an MP4 container.

You can use MediaInfo to determine what compression was used for the video and audio in your MP4 files. If they are suitable, you may be able to remux them into an AVI container for your DVD player. Try AviDemux.

jojo0 - jagabo is quite right, but just to warn you, MP4 files on the internet almost always means MPEG 4 part 10 and that's usually not supported by DVD players that can play Divx.

If you have to convert them why convert to vob. Vob will have to be 2-3 time larger to keep the same quality. Convert to Divx/xVid.

  7. Now that you're saying.... yes why ain't I converting it to divx? *slap to head*

Thanks a lot for saying it as these files did become a bit noisy yeh. I guess I have to use virtualdub for this or do you suggest anything else as it hasn't crossed my mind to convert to divx at all, even if it was so obvious!

EDIT: I just noticed that there have been questions like my initial one before in other topics, I apologise for making another without searching first
