Do you know the type of .avi -- as in the codec? DV? Xvid? Huffyuv? What? The .avi extension is just a container. We have to know more about the video inside the container. Could GSpot open the file at all?
Also, from where did the .avi come? If it's a download, chances are it may be a fake video file. -

I had a similar problem with .avi files not opening in my video editing software. I had to download a avi to mpeg converter to be able to open them. http://www.youtube.com/user/TheCherryChurch#p/a
