  1. I've been making SVCDs with tmpgenc for a while now and the picture quality is great but the audio kinda sux. It's not bad I guess, but I always get a bit of noise (sort of like a low hum or buzz) in the audio stream that bothers me (especially when I'm wearing headphones). I also tried toolame to encode the audio but I'm not really happy with that either. I get the same sort of noise. Any suggestions? Or am I just being anal?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

Oh, by the way I always encode the audio at 192 kbps or more.

    Thanks.

My favorite MPEG-1 audio encoder is QDesign's I-media MPEG audio pro. I believe, it is not for sale anymore, so you have to do a little google search. Also, do not use TMPG's built-in downsampler. If you need to downsample 48->44,1 kHZ, use ssrc or one of the pro audio editors.

  4. Well, I acchieve kinda good quality by doing like this (if you rip from DVD):

    1. Extract the desired AC3 file from the DVD (You should use the Dolby Digital 5.1 stream, if available)
    2. Use Azid to generate a wave file (apply Dynamic Range Compression, mix the subwoofer channel with -2db in the Left/Right Channels and use Surround output).
    3. Use SSRC to downsample from 48KHz to 44.1KHz and to get even better quality try 2-pass mode, it will take considerably longer but eventually you get a better downsampled wave file.
    4. Use the latest tooLame to make a 192 or 224kbit MP2 file, use the error protection and the stereo mode switch to get a good quality MP2 file.

The MPEG 1 Layer II Audio file will by many many times better than the once TMPGenc generates. Just test and enjoy!

PS.: I know that there is a tool called BeSweet which does all of this but instability issues held me from using the tool. Also: When you do it yourself you at least know what you've got.
