  1. Hi i am trying to put together a series of poker video's (I have hundreds) and i want to take small segments from different ones (2 minute clips) into one hour longish video.

The problem is that all of the video's have different height/width frame when they were made.

    Is this possible?

I have only had success when the videos are of the same height/width using avidemux to cut out and join in torrent mp4 joiner.

    Cheers

No. You have to modify the files in some way so that they all have the same basic properties - resolution, aspect ratio, framerate. This may mean resizing, or cropping, or adding letterboxing or borders, or a combination of some or all of these. Whichever you do, it will also require re-encoding.

  3. Okay very helpful thanks.

I have downloaded a program called xmedia recode that edits the frame size aspect ratio's etc, if i give these vid's the same parameters in this program is that all i'll need to do when you say i need to re-encode aswell?

So long as they all match.

However, before you go off half-cocked and start re-encoding your collection, take a moment to think about what the final destination for these clips will be. You want to minimise the number of times you re-encode, as each re-encode costs you quality, and this compounds. So if you intend to create a DVD, make sure all your new files are DVD compliant mpeg-2, ready for authoring. You can then use a smart editor such as VideoRedo or Womble Mpeg Video Wizard to assemble and edit with minimal further encoding and damage.

Regardless of where you are heading, make sure you know where that will be, and encode to get closer to it, not further away.

  5. great stuff, the final outcome i want is just for laptop use, and occasionally on my big TV via HDMI that is all.

I'm looking for the best way to achieve this as i don't want to put on dvd or anything like that.

You'll have to encode the files to the same format, aspect ratio etc. I'll suggest to use an encoder with batch encoding function, for example the Winavi Video Converter. It will do the job very fast, even with hundreds of videos. You can select the output to be a single long file or as separate small files.

Personally, I would rather lie under a train than use (or recommend using) WinAVI

XmediaRecode DOES reencode. That's what the name means. It reencodes everything through ffmpeg.
Use an existing profile, or create your own to specify the final format you want.

You could then join and edit using Avidemux as before.

However, you can also crop and resize etc in Avidemux using its filters, which is easier to configure case by case if they're all different.

I think there is a way to join videos automatically in Avidemux by naming the videos in a sequence like vid001.avi, vid002.avi...

There is in VDub anyway. Look it up, or someone else may have the details.
