I trying to work with MPEG Streamclip program to decode some video files for Final Cut Pro. When I work with VOB files from DVDs, the program gives me a message: The Aplle QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component is not installed. BUT I installed MPEG-2 codec! Maybe they want me to pay $20 for their MPEG-2 component? How can I validate my MPEG-2 component for this MPEG Streamclip program?

  2. What MPEG2 CODEC did you install, decoding CODEC? If you get that message it's because you don't have an encoding CODEC installed.

I installed QuickTimeMPEG2 playback component. Do you think I need QuickTimeMPEG2 encoding component ? Where can I find it if it exists? I think it is the same thing.

On the MAC basically yes you have to pay for the encoder from the Apple site - for Windows users all you need to do is install Quicktime Alternative version 1.81 as outlined on the MPEGStreamclip download site. AFAIK there isn't a MAC equivalent to Quicktime Alternative...

Maybe you should report this on the Apple site - I don't use my old G4 very much these days but it worked for me. From memory it was a a normal .dmg file and I just installed it in applications folder..

It says on the MPEG Streamclip site, that if you have Final Cut Pro, you already have the decoder and may just need to update it:

This free software requires at least Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar) and QuickTime 6. It is also compatible with Mac OS X 10.3.x (Panther), Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger), Mac OS X 10.5.x (Leopard) and QuickTime 7. It works with PowerPC and Intel based Macs.

For MPEG-2 playback and conversion, you need the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component. You can buy it from Apple (www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2). If you have either Final Cut Pro or DVD Studio Pro, then the component is already installed and you don't have to buy it; but you may need to download the latest version from Apple. If you bought an older version of the component, you can update it to the latest version (www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/update). Note that the MPEG-2 component is neither required nor useful for MPEG-1 or MPEG-4 files. But it is required for VOB files and transport streams, because they are MPEG-2 files.
It might be a good idea to ask the MPEG Streamclip people about the problem, rather than Apple, though.

I've been waiting for 2 years for a reply to a query I had I suspect Apple will be more responsive - as it really is an installation issue with the MAC. Nothing to configure in MPEGstreamclip it just finds the mpeg2 codec if it's in the right place..

If you speak Italian then maybe emailing to the Italian site might get a response ??? As I mentioned when I downloaded it it just worked.

Maybe, but I suspect Apple's response (since the OP is trying to get the component to work with MPEG Streamclip) will just be "ask the MPEG Streamclip people."

Did it install properly? Verify that you meet all the requierments:
    • QuickTime 7.6 or later (Pro not required)
    • PowerPC G4 (500MHz or faster) or Intel processor
    • At least 256MB of RAM
    • Mac OS X v10.4.10 or later
It's been a while since I last installed it and I can't remember what went on, if you even get a message upon completion. You could try to re-install MPEGStreamclip, it might need to detect it during installation.
