I'm using a editing program that for the particular edit that I'm trying to do can only edit a mpeg video file not AVI. The program can handle AVI but not for the job I am doing. I've had great success with this editing program with AVI files. I edit the AVI & then save it as AVI then convert with TMPGne to mpeg VCD & every thing looks great. Unfortunately there is one feature with this software that does not handle AVI & I'm forced to edit mpeg file. When I preveiw the edit every thing looks great, quality un changed from original, but when I save the file I have limited choices to save it to. I thought the most practical choice was to save it as mpegVCD but the resulting file has very low quality. The other options to save as AVI, DV, MPEG1 and there is no option to custom set these choices. I know I can try another software to do what I want to do but I would prefer to use this software. Can anyone tell me if there is a way to save Mpeg file after editing without losing quality?

Why don't you let us in on the secret and tell us what software you are actually using. Then maybe someone familiar with the software can help you.
