  1. What's the minimalist way to enable ffdshow for video playback in Win7? I know it works whenever I install CCCP, but I'd like to know if there is a cleaner way.

Uninstall ccp and install only ffdshow and configure(Video decoder configuration) to disable all codecs except for the one(s) you want to use.

  3. Last time when I installed ffdshow only, it wouldn't work when I open a video in either Windows Media Player or Media Player Classic in Windows 7. It only started working after I installed CCCP. Is ffdshow supposed to work with Windows 7 directly?

I never had any problems using ffdshow in win7 64 by itself.

  7. what didn't work ? how do you know ? what software are you using for playback ? ffdshow has to have the highest merit to work for that particular source

are you logged in as administrator ? do you have permissions ?

  8. My AC3 was not going through SPDIF so I reinstalled just ffdshow but that didn't work. I'm using Media Player Classic Home Cinema. I uninstalled CCCP, installed win7dsfiltertweaker and ffdshow, but I don't think ffdshow was being enabled during playback, the icon didn't show up. I uninstalled everything again then installed the latest version of CCCP. I repeated the process and eventually SPDIF worked but I still don't know what the problem was, and I'm still dependent on CCCP.

    My user account says Administrator.

  9. MPCHC has internal spitters and filters that override many external splitters and filters that are system installed. You may have to disable or configure those within the MPCHC options. Those settings may have been adjusted when you install that codec pack for example

You can also use the MPCHC option section to config how to handle external filters and codecs. Add ffdshow as an external filter in view, options, external filters. Then click the 'ffdshow video decoder' and set it to prefer, do the same for the 'ffdshow Audio Decoder'. Like poisondeathray said, you might have to change the internal filters if mpchc does not use the ffdshow decoders.
