My first post. I have searched for this, but all I can locate are guides on the reverse--converting VOB to ISO. That is NOT what I need. I need the reverse.

The reason--I have several video compilations I need to re-author and re-do into 1. Trouble is, almost all of them are in ISO format, and I need them in VOB format so I can edit them.

I have DVD Decryptor, DVD Shrink, DVD Flick, and WinFF.

DVD Flick can "author" but it actually can't author VOB files, it authors files like AVI, MPEG4 etc. So I've been using WinFF to convert to AVI, but I'm having to find the original discs and re-do them as VOB instead of ISO, when what would be easier for me is to simply convert the ISO files themselves to VOB and go from there.

What do I need for this?

Download and install 7-zip and then right click the iso file and extract to folder of the same name and welcome to the forums.

There is no "conversion" either way....
An ISO is just a container.

You could do what johns0 suggested or you could use winrar, or you could run the ISO through dvdshrink with no compression and make a VIDEO_TS folder or use something like MagicISO to extract the contents, mount the ISO in a virtual drive and rip to VIDEO_TS folder with dvddecrypter, imgburn, ect

Thanks to both of you. What I also need, and I just realized this--and will probably post a new thread to the forums to ask--is a free DVD authoring program which can re-author a new DVD--complete with simple menus (and chapter-title specification points)--and do so from the DVD-format files (VOB). DVD Flick is fine except it can't do this, and converting those VOB files to AVI just to satisfy it REALLY adds to the workflow.

I am aware of TMPGEnc DVD Author (I have a 4-5 year old version at home) and that works great for me, but this is at work and they're cheapskate with regards to spending money on software--so I need freeware for that.

But again I will post a new thread asking that.

You should look through the "TOOLS" section, the link is in the left hand side menu on every page of the site.

Look under "Authoring (DVD) (42)" there are several free authoring tools and they will be listed if they are free or how much they cost.

The most popular free one seems to be DVDAuthorgui

(johns0) Thanks very much. I have 7-Zip on my Windows 7 PC at home, and tried it--and it did just what you said it would, and very quickly--a full-length 4.7G movie took barely 60 seconds. And Z-Zip is a program I already had anyway, so it lets me stay "minimalist" with regards to software installation. A most emphatic "yes!"

As for free DVD authoring programs, I will try DVDAuthorgui tomorrow.

You are still not fully understanding what is going on. That ISO image always was a "full-length 4.7G movie"....but we're glad you now have something that you know what to do with.
