i have a client who wants their sd recording from a mini dv camcorder transfreed to dvd. im planning to do so via firewire and a pioneer dvd recorder.

The problem is that they also want me to capture the date stamp that appears on the camcorder screen when i play it but it does not show on my monitor or record onto the dvd despite seeing it on the camcorder

any ideas as to how i can do this?

Use a subtitle during authoring to dvd and either have it as selectable or permanent.

Any dvd authoring software that supports subtitles will let you add one with any text you want so you just add the time index into the subtitle, just an option since you captured without time codes, read more about subtitles in the help section.
