  1. I want to build a machine mostly for svcd encoding but for many other things too and can't decide between an athlon xp 1800 or a pentium 4 1.8 or 1.9. I know the pentium has sse2 so it will be faster but is there any quality difference between the xp or intel or is it just speed? Does anyone know how well the sse in the athlon xp is supported by software anyway?

Its only a speed issue. Currently, I have an AMD XP 1800+ and my SVCD encodes are sweet and fast. (Just a reminder on processor comparisions the XP 1800 is comparable in speed to the P4 2.0GHz. Also the XP supports MMX, SSE and 3Dnow!.)
