I'm currently using XMedia Recode and was wondering if there way to add the .srt file to the AVI I want to convert to an MKV so it will be embedded as an subtitle option, but not burned in on the screen.

    Thanks

You might be better off just using mkvmerge (mmg.exe for the GUI, as I recall) in the mkvtoolnix package, to mux the .srt file into the finished MKV as a soft subtitle stream.

Does XMedia Recode not have an option to add a .srt when I encode?

I really don't want to have to download another program again just for MKV files

mkvmerge will make your mkv file without the need to re-encode. Very fast, no quality loss. And it is a small download.

Is there something like this for MP4 or AVI files as well?

mkvtoolnix is a good set of tools to have around if you're working with MKV-container videos. Add MKVExtractGUI-2or MKVExtractGUI to the same folder as mkvtoolnix, and you'll have a GUI setup to extract streams from an MKV, as well.

For AVI, I think AVI-Mux GUI may be what you want (haven't muxed anything into an AVI container in a while, and I usually just do it in VirtualDubMod, anyway. )

For MP4: MP4Box. Though, if you use YAMB as the GUI for MP4Box, you might want to use version 1.6, if possible, and stay away from the beta versions. A number of people have apparently had a problem with it deleting or otherwise messing up their Start Menu folders when uninstalling.

Well I appreciate your suggestions, thanks.

But this is all pretty much what I wanted to avoid, which was having to install three additional programs where only one would be desirable.

XMedia Recode works very well but I don't see a subtitle option to add a SRT and that's all I'm really looking for is the ability to be able to do this.

I'm not really aware, offhand, of any straightforward converter that handles softsubs properly when converting. Most of the time, you'll probably end up having to demux the subtitle streams and then mux the subtitles into the converted file (or hardsub, if you prefer).
