I have converted AVI files to a playable DVD using Nero and also tried Toast on my brother's Mac and get the same problem.

DVD plays properly until the last 10-15 mins then picture freezes and then picks up again further into the movie (like the movie has paused on screen but is still running on the disc ), when it restarts the sound is fine but the pixels are distorted. Does this 3-4 times and always towards the end of the DVD.

I burn at the slowest speed of 1 0r 2.

Am I setting the bitrate ?? incorrectly? Any ideas would help.

It sounds like the AVI is corrupted and has a problem with the last 10-15 minutes of the video. I'm not familiar with Toast, but Nero isn't generally a good converter program, IMO. You could try Avi2Dvd or DVD Flick or similar. I use ConvertXToDVD, but it's payware.

This doesn't sound like a burning problem, but you could preview the DVD before burning and you might be able to tell. One possibility is that the DVD brand is lower quality and the problem area is near the edge of the disc. In this case, create a smaller file that doesn't extend so close to the outer edge of the disc or use better quality media.

Just because a AVI type file plays back properly on a computer doesn't mean it's not damaged. Software players can skip over corrupted sections and you may not notice.

You didn't mention what video format the file was in. AVI is a container that can contain many, many different video and audio codecs. If you want to identify the contents of the AVI file, try MediaInfo. You might try opening the AVI type file in a editor like Virtualdub and see if it shows any errors. Check especially at the 'last 10 -15 mins' area and I suspect you may find a problem there.

Use better blank discs: Read the blank DVD quality review and blank discs guides.

I think redwudz hit most of the other aspects to look into.
Encoding, hard drive corruptions (defrag!), etc.
