  1. Hi.
I have the latest MPC-HC (installed with k-lite mega codec pack this time, previous times I installed it on my own from their website).
MKV files (720p) doesn't work as they should with MPC.
When I open a mkv file, it plays ok for a few seconds but then it becomes slower and slower and slower and the cpu usage rises really fast and finally I have to close mpc-hc through task manager.
BUT, these files do work with Windows Media Player without any problem.
Latest K-Lite Mega Codec Pack is installed. (I understood that installing k-lite or any codec pack isn't a good idea only after reading few topics here today when searching for similar problem to mine, so next time I won't install it).
    Latest drivers are installed.
    Filters settings: http://i50.tinypic.com/2vbucer.jpg
    So I have 2 questions:
    1. How to make mpc-hc play these mkv files smoothly as it did before I did a fresh install of Windows (1 week ago)?
    2. I want to know why k-lite codec pack or any other codec pack isn't recommended. Also, I would like to know how to play files without codec packs. Playing video with MPC-HC is understandable as it have it's own codecs (right?), but audio files I prefer playing with windows media player, so FLAC and other formats won't work by default.

    Thanks, waiting for your answers

Hit search Codec Pack Problems, read. There are millions of posts and problems caused by these, they are not recommended by anyone who knows what they are talking about.

Codec Packs throw a whole load of codecs at your system without knowing what they are doing, what they are going to be used for etc. They are constantly giving users issues with conflicts between codecs, usually between what they have added plus what you have on your system, but some are even so terrible that the codecs within the pack itself can conflict with each other. They are difficult to remove, as by nature they put things all over your system, meaning that even after you've uninstalled and removed everything you could find, it can still be there causing conflicts. They are the equivelent of feeling ill and going to your doctors and saying, i'll just have some of all the pills, hoping that one of them will make you feel better.

Much more accurate would be to look at the files that your trying to play with something like mediainfo, work out exactly what your dealing with, if you need to download a codec, find it, get it on its own so you know what you've got and theres no risk of messing up other things that currently work fine.
Copy/Pasted from other times people ask exactly the same thing about codec packs.

I'd advise restoring PC to pre-codec pack and starting again.

  3. Thanks for the quick answer, I now know what to do with codecs next time I install windows.
But, I wasn't planning reformatting windows now because of this problem, is it really necessary?
    Nothing else to do? :\

uninstall codec pack...then install ffdshow and try.

use crap cleaner to get rid of stupid megacodec pack registry entries.

Uninstalled K-lite with "Your Uninstaller" using "super mode" + cleaned with CCleaner afterwards.
Restarted, then Installed MPC-HC from their website and MKV works flawlessly again! Amazing
    Thank you for help.
I downloaded ffdshow as you said but didn't installed it yet, will install soon.

If its playing flawlessly, why do you think you need ffdshow? MPC-HC has its own internal codecs. Very unlikely you'll need anything else for playback.
    Have a good one,

Probably, although I haven't use WMP in many years, I always used MPC and VLC, now MPCHC. Anyway, installing ffdshow will do no harm and is necessary if you use any encoding/conversion software for dealing with H.264 encoded files.
    Pull! Bang! Darn!
