Converting to and from gp3 format

I'm new here and very much a video novice, hope you'll bare with me!

I'm having trouble trying to convert to and from gp3. I have an avi file I wanted to convert to gp3 så that I could have it on my cellphone and I tried a couple of free programs I found on the net. In one case it simply wouldn't accept an avi file and in the other it claimed a successful conversion but the file created was empty! I then tried to take a gp3 file from my cellphone but in both cases it wasn't recognised as a gp3 file.

Are there different gp3 formats? Is there a good free conversion program that'll work for me?
