    Hey guys!

My girlfriend has been having a few problems with her XP Acer aspire one.

When moving the screen around you get the sound that windows makes when a device is disconnected, then if you move it back the oppisite way you get the connect device sound. This only happens in a particular place when moving the screen, roughly 70ish degrees.

Is there any way I can find out which device is disconneting/connecting, so as to try and fix the problem?

  2. You can go to Device Manager to see if anything is disconnected, it will have a red X or a yellow exclamation point.
My guess is you have a bad cable.

It sounds like the flexible wire strip that goes to the upper part of the netbook is damaged. If it's under warranty, I would send it in. The Wi-Fi antenna, and possibly the Bluetooth antenna are probably in the upper part. You could check them and see if the signal is interrupted. The Task Manager/Networking may show you. I don't think that netbook has a camera, but that would be another possibility.

One other possibility is that the lid switch is the problem. You could check that by changing the power settings in Control Panel. It's probably set to shut down when the lid is closed. Disable that temporarily and see if that makes any difference.

Redwudz the netbook does have a camera but I cannot seem to get it to work or be regonised, the wifi signal seems fine.

EDIT: I have just found out that it is the webcam that is connecting/disconnecting when moving the screen

Then I would again suspect the ribbon cable or the attachments at the ends of it. But netbook or laptop, they aren't easy to disassemble and very easy to damage. Not recommended for a home project. But there is still a slight possibility that the camera is supposed to shut off at that lid angle.

I suppose if it's not under warranty, I would probably just forget about the camera and get a USB one if you really need a cam. I have a camera on my Asus Eee netbook, but I've really never used it. I suspect a netbook is fairly expensive to have repaired.

I had actually taken iit apart for something else and yes your right it was not easy! Took me over 3 hrs! I may have another look to see how easy it is to dismantle the screen section.

Unfortunatly the warranty has expired so I may look to see if it can be disconnected in any way! Thanks again for the help guys!

You may be able to disable it by going to your 'Control Panel>System>Device Manager' and select the device and 'Disable'. The screens are even harder to take apart as they don't usually use screws. Without a step by step disassembly guide, very risky. But you can search around the net to see if you can find one. I did for my old HP laptop and managed to change out the DVD drive. I could never taken it apart without one. And it also took about three hours.

  8. There should be a plug for it under the keyboard.

Here is a link that has Acer maintanance manuals. The Site is in Russian but the laptop models are easy to find.

    http://www.azbooki.ru/literatura.php?name=instrukcii-po-razborke-noutbukov-acer.txt

Look on the bottom of the laptop to get the real model number.

    Good Luck
If I'd known I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself.
