  1. Hi guys, I was wondering has there been a break through on making a mkv out of bluray 3d movies ie cloudy with a chance of meatballs, ice age 3, coraline or monsters vs aliens.

Or is it gonna be a while before something like that will be done.
    thanks dave

No "breakthrough" yet, if by breakthrough you mean hacking and decoding of BD3D's "SSIL" files. Once that becomes reality, options for re-wrapping (into MKV, or AVI/MOV/MP4 whatever) or reencoding to whatever format will be fairly straightforward.

But I have to ask, "WHY MKV"?

Yes, MKV does have header metadata which supports some forms of S3D, but there are NO players that support this additional info (beyond reading/displaying the info). One could be built, but just like other endeavors, it would have to be built from the ground up being able to understand and work with S3D files as well as 2D files. I would welcome an opensource player, but none has even been mentioned as in development yet, so you'll have a long wait.
You could hope for Peter Wimmer's stereoscopic player to support MKV (and you can already facilitate playback through Haali Media splitter/AVISynth/GraphEdit), but from a number of conversations with him he doesn't seem inclined to develop this area. Seems to be focusing more on CE/corporate/cinema usage with BluRay3D itself and DCP playback, is a proponent of WMV, and not an opponent of DRM. All roads which seem counter to the MKV culture.

And there are plenty of currently workable alternatives - Dualstream WMV, Dual file or Dualstream AVI/MOV/MP4/MPG, SbS and Over/Under as well. Or just decrypting retaining BD3D in an ISO file. And I think it's especially important at this point in time to focus on standards and interoperability WRT 3D file formats, media, transport channels, and umbrella player/display options. It's somewhat fragile right now, but if all goes well, 3D will really take off... (so additional format variations can be somewhat of a distraction and impdiment)
