  2. Who in the heck would want to watch a movie that has been formatted to fit your TV?

  4. Well those black bars are there for a reason. So you can watch the movie in it's full aspect ratio that was intended by the director.

I suggest keeping those black bars

  6. Glad you now understand why Letterboxing is so important! Now be sure to avoid those "Full-Screen" DVDs. They are evil

  7. I do this sometimes myself, when dealing with a movie that has very large letterboxing - the type where the actual movie constitutes about 1/2 of my standard 4:3 TV screen. Personally I find it incredibly distracting, so at the expense of some detail, I like to boost the height a bit and chop off some width.

Its just some simple math (you want to keep the aspect ratio - don't just stretch the height), but its not the easiest thing to explain here - if there is any interest I could try doing a guide for it - otherwise, I'm sure most can figure out the percentages, how much to chop off horizontally in relation to how much you increase the height, etc..

BTW, only do this if you're ripping a DVD or using a high quality source (even a good SVCD or Divx) - reencoding a 1150bps VCD just ain't worth it.
