hello, im still a newbie about video capture and i hope you can help me. I tried to capture a few old vhs-c on my pc, if i playback them on the vcr they look "perfect" while after capturing i see strange horizontal lines , i cant describe them (english is not my native language) so here is an example:

ah im not about the interlaced effect, i mean such strange horizontal lines you can see randomly on the screen
-
Do you mean the problem the red line is pointing to?
Those are time base errors -- from the recording or playback head not maintaining perfect playback speed, or maybe some defect on the tape. A line time base corrector should take care of most of it. That means a good S-VHS deck with line TBC, or an external TBC like in the Panasonic ES-15 DVD recorder.

If you're talking about the junk at the bottom of the frame, all VHS tapes have that. All you can do is mask it or crop it away. -
thanks for your answer,

It has to be fixed with a TBC before capture.
One thing you can try is to fast foward the tape all the way to the end, rewind back to the beginning, and cap again. If any of the problems are caused by uneven winding of the tape on the reels, or the tape sticking, you might get better caps. -
ok thanks for the explanation, do u think the vhs-c adapter that im using to play the tapes could cause the problem too?
-
I don't have any experience with those VHS-C/VHS adapters but I suppose it could cause that type of problem.

just one more question, why if i connect my vcr to a tv i cant see this problem? if it's related to
the recording or playback head not maintaining perfect playback speed -
again another question, i've found this discussion http://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/showthread.php/fixing-vhs-tearing-2196.html and a guy says that i could use a device like a Panasonic DMR-ES10 DVD recorder to convert my olds vhs because it has a good built in TBC and it works fine (not with macromedia protected tapes but i dont need it)...do u think it's a good idea to buy a used one ? or simply it wont do the job ? thanks

ES10 may fix it.

ok thanks, but why i cant see such lines when i play the tape on a normal tv without capturing ? the vcr and the cables are the same, so (sorry if im so noob :P) in my opinion it should be a problem with the capture card, no?
-
Capture cards are often a little more sensitive to small time base errors. A different capture card may work better. The link I gave earlier showed examples using a Panasonic ES15 DVD recorder's passthrough to clean up time base errors.

ok thanks again jagabo...i feel really stupid because you suggested me the Panasonic ES15 DVD recorder and i didnt even notice!..sorry
i will try with a different capture card and then i will try to buy the ES15! with the ES15 i should connect my vcr to the ES15 and then again connect it to my capture card? -
Short answer: The TV set expects messy signals and is made to fix problems. Capture cards are not.
The long answer requires lots of technical reading to understand analog signal theory.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)
