I downloaded some avi video files, but after extracting when I click to play on the PC with VLC I get the message 'The AVI file is broken' with options to repair, dont repair or cancel.
How do I fix the avi files so that they can be converted to DVD? I click repair on VLC, then go back to the same file and have to repair each time.

Depends what's wrong with it and what format it is. VLC only repairs it for viewing most times. VLC can transcode to other formats but not many options. You could try VirtualDub and after selecting the file, mark the checkbox at the bottom of the program for 'Ask for extended options after this dialog'. Then check the 'Rekey' box in the next dialog. You may have to install the proper codecs first. The most common problem is messed up indexes. VD should at least give you some info about the file.

You can also try divfix, or drdivx.
