One of the first things you notice when you start getting involved in forums and social networks on the internet is that they are filled with armchair lawyers and armchair doctors and armchair experts in pretty much all fields. You will also find that most of them are simply regurgitating half-truths and misunderstandings, or just MSU (Making Shit Up). That isn't to say that they aren't sometimes accidentally correct, but some dick posting a comment on your youtube video should not be taken as the sole arbiter of what is right or wrong with your video.

In the case of your video, technically, if you don't own the rights to the music or have permission to use it, then you should not use it for a public piece. And when you post on youtube, it becomes public. Even if you have for performance rights and recorded your own version, you may not have permission to use it in a public forum such as youtube. Putting credits in your video doesn't cover it. That said, youtube have a pretty robust protection scheme for music used in submitted videos, and yours hasn't been tagged, the copyright owners aren't chasing too hard - yet. Similarly, for public exhibition you may have to get releases form people who are identifiable etc.

The follow up posts are simply expressing (sarcastically) how restrictive copyright protection is becoming, which every man/woman and their canine friend out to make a buck from every image shot. You can take most of it with a grain of salt.

It is probably worth going back to your instructors and suggesting that they research and include some basic copyright law. Even thought it can get complex, and there are lots of exceptions and loopholes, the basics are pretty easy to cover.

Obviously this video was made for internal use only (and pretty well done at that) and wasn't intended to for public exhibition.

  3. Yeah, I think that second to most recent post was done with tongue planted firmly in cheek. He's was responding to the previous guy that pointed out the copyright violation. And as guns1inger says, since it wasn't immediately blocked it's probably OK. For now.

It also looks like the school itself has posted these, so either they are unconcerned about the use of campus property and student images, or (more likely) they simply haven't considered the issue at all. I know that the school I have most dealings with gets releases signed by all students/parents at enrolment for images used in-house or for public/promotional use (there are about 5 different levels of use on the release form), and when ever anything visual is being put together, from the monthly newsletter to the school prospectus to advertising images and even the website, the releases for every student who appears have to be checked and confirmed.

This is from your discriminating "copyright master":

I will upload whatever I feel like uploading whenever I feel like uploading it. Sometimes it might be interesting and sometimes it might be me just trying to figure out how to improve the quality of my videos.

And this genious is telling you about copyright infringement. Consider the source.

Great video, by the way - excellent quality, creative.

Yeah, the music isn't your original track.

If this is YOUR video then you should own the rights to it......

.... unless you signed away the legal rights to this to the school.

.... or unless you took material that was previously copyrighted elsewhere and you pieced that together to make your video

However, youtube might consider the background music to be a copyright violation. Sometimes they are strict about that. If they have a problem with it then you will know because they will come in and disable the audio.

I wouldn't worry about it though. The worst that could happen is they would disable your video on their site. No one is going to haul you off to jail.

  7. If there are copyright questions, Youtube would take it off themselves.

  8. You have to remember that there are deranged people on YouTube but you have two choices, ignore the poster or delete his/her comments. As was mentioned if there was a copyright violation YouTube would of told whoever uploaded the video.
