Hi...
Can you please tell me step by step how to convert a 300 MB MKV video to exactly 175 MB AVI which I can view on my PS3...
Please tell me which software to use and what settings to input as I know very little about video conversions...
Also, which software should I use to get info about MKV file (video bitrate, audio bitrate, video scale etc.); I use G spot for DIVX files...
I used SUPER converter for that conversion but the quality seems horrible after conversion and also, I can't get exactly 175 MB for my output file...
Thanks...

Is there a reason you need the output video to be exactly 175 MB?
As it's an MKV, you might try MKV2VOB, first. But that attempts to repackage the MKV so that it's viewable on the PS3, and doesn't convert it, so it'll still be roughly 300 MB.
Edit: For information about most video files, including MKV, use MediaInfo. You can use it alongside GSpot, if you want.If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them? -
Yes, there is a reason...
I need it to be 175 MB because I have to convert 4 episodes of a TV series so that they can fit to a DVD alongside with the other 20 episodes...
They need to be AVI because I can then play them on PS3 and I also want all the episode to be in the same format...
These episodes were released in MKV, which is kinda weird since all the previous ones were in AVI but the quality of these episodes is not any better than the previous ones...
So, do you have any other ideas besides MKV2VOB since that won't change the size of the file?
P.S. It's isn't suppose to be playable only on PS3 but on my other DVD players as well... -
Hmm... offhand, I don't know of any specific solutions for converting MKV to AVI (for players) that'll also allow you to control the output size. I usually just convert the MKVs using AVIDemux for my DVD player (Phillips 5990), but I don't bother with trying to limit the output size, so I don't know how you might do it, there. (We do have a PS3, but I don't normally use it for video-file playing.)
If you can frameserve the MKV into the more recent versions of VirtualDub (you may also be able to load it with the DirectShow plugin, but either way, you'll probably need ffdshow installed, with h.264 support and such enabled), you should be able to run a two-pass encoding with DivX or Xvid and roughly control the output size (it'll probably be less than 175 MB, and not exactly that size). If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them? -
If you have the Xvid codec installed You can access it from the start menu > All programs > XVid > Configure Encoder.
From there you can open up the bitrate calc (Button "calc") and that will give you you desired bitrate for encoding your avi file.
If you have Video Inspector you can find out your audio bitrate or in the calc mentioned above you can specify the audio bitrate which you are going to encode to. If AVIDemux fails I hope that helpsLast edited by Arch3type; 15th Jun 2010 at 00:05. Reason: Better Idea
