  2. RAID 1 is not a good backup solution. It protects you from one drive going bad but if you delete a file, or if the O/S goes bonkers and scribbles to the array (not unusual), both drives will be corrupt. You still need to perform real backups.

There are many external enclosures (eSATA and USB) that allow for RAID mirroring but look like a single drive to the computer. For example:

  3. I have seen some that fit into a two 5.25" bays that held two hard drives and had the raid controller built-in. I'm sorry I do not recall the brand.
If I'd known I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself.

  4. I remember seeing something like that at one of the last computerfest in Toronto, must have been way back in 2003. It was a drive that fit in a 5.25" bay, it had an LCD display on the front and it mirrored your boot drive. Whenever you did a shutdown, if the boot drive had changed a message would appear on the display asking to save the changes to the mirror. It was smart enough to ignore changes to some files like the swap file. If you had a problem with your OS, you could restore it from this drive and never lose any data. The demo I saw was impressive, but it didn't catch on, it was just too pricey. I just can't recall the name, I think it had vault in it.
