  1. What the heck is a DX50 codec / decompressor? I've never seen this before... what else could I try to extract the video and save the file?

    Why are you using a old version of Vdub ?. Is the source a ASF ?
    Download the latest version 1.49 this might be your problem.

    However the source AVI may have been made with a DX50 codec, who knows what people use to capture these days

    maybe the DX50 is the new DIVx 5.0 codec... I dont know... just suppose....

  4. I use an older VirtualDub cause I like .asf support, BUT THIS IS an .avi file... I'll try divx5 and a newer version of VIrtualDub too and see what happens... might try GraphEdit also

    Ok found it. The DX50 is in fact the DivX5 codec, you get this error if you have installed over the top with an older codec, or simply don't have the divx5 codec in the first place.

    If you have DivX 4.8 alpha on your system DivX 5 will replace it, if you install DivX 4.8 it will replace DivX 5 -
