My mate and I are both looking at getting a Firewire card for capture from a DV camcorder.

Is the IDE hard drives we have good enough? I think they are 5400rpm.

    I have a Duron 800 and my mate has a P111 600.

    Any info appreciated

    We have Ulead software

  2. Well first off i'd say yes, i've done it and it worked fine. But the're a few things that may make a difference: what os are u using, do you have compression enabled on your hard drive. what speed is your hard drive (ataxxx?). what software are you using to do the transfert. do you have enough ram to run that software without virtual memory.etc etc.

what os are u using- Win 98

do you have compression enabled on your hard drive? - Dont know? How do I check?

what speed is your hard drive (ataxxx?) - Not sure? Its a Maxtor 20.4GB 5400rpm

what software are you using to do the transfert - Ulead Media Studio Pro 6 I assume will do it?

do you have enough ram to run that software without virtual memory.etc etc. - 256MB enough?

We want to make VCD/SVCDs from the video. We have all the software needed, its just I read that you cant use an IDE drive?

  4. I would say that yes your harddrive is fast enought to capture dv video. But really your the only person that can make that determination. Whats the transfer rate of the HD? Most drives these days are fast enough for DV capture.

What you might want to think about is space. A 20GB drive isn't that big for capture. DV takes about 4GB for 18 minutes of video, add to that the space you need for editing and such, and a 20gb drive will be gone in no time.
