  1. Hi, I am in the process of learning how to use Tmpgenc as a file conversion software. I have several hours of HD that I want to convert to SD to burn onto a disc for family members who don't have a Blu Ray player.

I have only converted a couple of files, but so far they seem to be converting well with audio and video looking good, cross your fingers

    I have two questions:

    1) What would make my conversion have multiple files in the Video_TS folder once I have converted? I have two files that say they are the back up file of the IFO. One is 8KB and the other is 12KB. I have 2 other files that are the IFO files (one being 8KB and the other being 12KB) Than lastly I have a file that is 62.2MB that is a .VOB. What is an IFO and a .VOB file???

    2) Can I make it so when I convert the HD file that I just have the .VOB file? I assume this is the one that I need since it is a larger size file. Not sure???

If you need me to send specs of any of the settings please let me know what you would like to know about. I haven't quite mastered sending screen shots yet, lol

    Thank you!!!

...and scroll down to this section:
    DVD File/Folder Structure

If you want to make discs that can play on family members' DVD players, you need to allow Tmpgenc to do its thing in making DVD-compliant movies.

  3. Thanks for the quick reply and the link I appreciate it! So, it sounds like I need to just leave the multiple files alone and not worry about them? When I get to the point, hopefully soon that I can burn multiple SD files to disc I need JUST the .VOB files, correct?

    Thank you!

No. You need all of them. The IFO, BUP, and VOB files must be inside a VIDEO_TS folder. It is best to Burn that folder to disc with Imgburn in the Build mode.

  5. Thanks for the clarification. So, when I am saving multiple video clips I don't know if it will save multiple VIDEO_TS folders or just keep them all in one. Do you have suggestions on the best way to organize them? If there are multiple VIDEO_TS folders can I rename the folders? If there is just one folder with multiple files can I rename the .VOB files? I am looking for a way to identify certain parts of my video footage for quick reference.

    Thank you!

No, you cannot rename the folders or just shuffle things around.

Each video_ts folder represents a single DVD. If you add multiple clips to a single DVD, they will all reside in the same video_ts folder, and probably in the same VOBs.

If you just want video clips for accessing later, and not DVD structures, don't output DVD structures. Output mpg files instead.
If you do want DVD structures, create a new folder for each one, with the name of the DVD, and put the video_ts folder inside that. If you screw with the video_ts folder, you will just get a non-working pile of files.

  7. Thank you. What I am looking to do is to take the currently backed up files from my camcorder which are now (.m2ts, .modd, and .moff) and convert them from HD to SD. After the the video is converted from HD to SD I want to take each of the SD video files and create a DVD.

Sorry, if I am not quite to speed in regards to what the different files are for. I have learned about that just tonight. What I want to be able to also do is in the future if I want to full my converted SD files to create a NEW DVD I want to have them "organized" in such a way that I can identify what the footage is of.

If I were to output mpg files instead what does that do? Could I take the HD files, convert them to SD with the output being mpg and be able to drag and drop or create a DVD using the mpg? If so, where can I change to mpg instead of how I must have it now?

I may be making this way more complicated than it needs to with how I currently have the conversion set up. Which is why I am asking a lot of questions to ensure I have it set up the best way I need for what I want. Quick future reference of video AND to be able to use that converted HD to SD video to make a DVD now and again in the future.

    Thank you!!

If you don't need to store the SD files, but just want a DVD, then output a DVD structure as an ISO file (if tmpgenc has this option). This gives you a single file that you can name as you like, but still burn using Imgburn

  9. Thanks, it sounds like I need different structures for different things. I want to create the DVD AND store the files for future reference.

What does 'future reference' mean to you ?
What do you intend to do with these files ?

Ideally, the only files you should need to keep are the source HD files. The SD files have been scaled down and compressed for DVD. Other than the DVDs which you will have burned, why do you need these files ?

  11. Future reference to me means to use again in the future. The files that I am burning to a disc are for grandparents of my kids. I hate to think that once I made a disc I should just delete those files (SD) and keep only the HD one's. Only because if I want to make another disc I would have to spend that time again to re convert the files.

I guess this is what I get for asking my husband for an HD camcorder, but not the HD to burning Blu Ray, lol

OK. What I would do in your situation is this.

    1. Output Video_ts folders from tmpgenc and test to make sure you are happy with them.
    2. Once you are happy that everything works, create an ISO file using Imgburn (Create Image File from Files/Folders function)
    3. Burn a copy to DVD (Write Image File to Disc function)
    4. Put the ISO onto a portable drive to keep it for later re-burning.
