Sony players have been historically difficult to hack for different regions. And portable players more so. But maybe someone here has some ideas.

    And welcome to our forums.

Redwudz is right, which means the odds are against you being able to unlock it. Most DVD players sold in the USA and Canada cannot be unlocked - ever. And the situation seems to get more grim every day. Even Philips. who just a few years ago just about didn't make any players anywhere that couldn't be unlocked now produces some players that can't be unlocked.

You need to find a polite and helpful way to explain to the gift giver that while you certainly appreciate the gesture, region codes make that kind of gift impractical for people who don't live in the USA or Canada.

eBay's got lots of hacked DVP-FX950's. So it can obviously be done. The trick is how and where to find hack. This forum used to have much more interested parties who would go out and find hacks and share. Sort of a challenge. Either Sony's has made it super secret and difficult, or the innovation hacking spirit is gone.

I would go look up some prior models and try the same hack.
