I am thinking about taking a dvd, compressing it to.avi. In the tools section of this site I have seen several programs that should do the job seemingly easily. But I have one question, which might leas to another; in order to compress a dvd to .avi do I have to save it to a folder on my computer first? and, if I have to do that first, what program is the simplest, fastest way to do that?

no you don't have to copy to the hard drive, but the encoding might go faster if you did. if it's a retail dvd, you will need to decrypt it with either anydvd or dvdfab. if it's not encrypted then you can just copy the video_ts folder to your hard drive with windows.

  3. Open your DVD with AnyDVD in Background in XMedia Recode...
