  1. From this page here, http://docs.blackberry.com/en/smartphone_users/subcategories/?userType=1&category=Medi...%20Smartphones, on supported media types for my BB, which is a PDF dl file. On page 25 of that guide, I see that for AVI, this simple outline says what is needed:

    AVI

Video: MPEG-4 - Simple and advance simple profile, 240 x 320 pixels, up to 768 kbps, 24 frames per second
    Audio: MP3

My converter software doesn't have this 240x320 pixels, I used the closest available that was smaller (assuming this was better than going to closest _larger_ size), so I went with 220x176. On my brother's MP3 Player, the specs were one thing but it seemed that I could get away with almost anything _under_ the specs given (i.e., smaller sizes).

The audio is not more specific, so I don't know if it should be 44100 sample rate or what ...

The fact is that no matter what codecs, etc., I've tried, I can't get any of the many converted clips trials to play.

So I've come here to see if anyone knows of conversion software that gives the 220x176 pixel size for MPEG4.

I have AutoGK but haven't been able to figure out how to set output conversion target specs at. I'd prefer not to use VirtualDub as it's a pain and it takes forever to re-encode.

My AnyVideoConverter is the one that doesn't have the right pixel size.

But hopefully someone here knows of an app that does do this size.

Meanwhile, I'm going to call my cell phone provider back to see if I can't get a handle on the specs for the audio (MP3) to see if a different operator knows more than the previous ones have and who can tell me what parameters are acceptable for the BB even though the manual just says "MP3". They're not so good with details like this and want me to use their Roxio stuff but I just want to settle on _one_ converter software for both my Blackberry _and_ PC/DVD needs and I've never liked Roxio.

    Thanks!

  2. Oh, p.s., a lot of the stuff I'm converting FROM are .mp4 vid clips off the web. They don't play, as is, on my BB Pearl 8230, either. So am trying to convert to AVI.

I mentioned AutoGK but we can cross it off the list of potential apps to use since it doesn't support MP4.

So modifying my request for converters that handle MP4s as source vids.

Thanks much! I haven't had my Pearl long (1 month) but, boy, don't know how I lived without it! <g>

Try XMedia Recode or FOrmat Factory or XviD4PSP. They have video profiles for blackberry and you can also choose custom video resolutions and video and audio codecs.

  4. Thanks for these! Checking the first one out right now as we speak. It's re-encoding. The second I'm dl.

The 3rd. Xvid4PSP. requires .NET 3 framework so it's a no go. I'm moving over to Linux one day soon so none of those .NET ones for me! <g>

    I'll report back.

  5. Awesome, at least first trial went perfectly! The clip is playing on my Pearl 8230 right now! <g>

This is great. I'm going to convert all the rest and put them on my phone and then test out.

<sigh> Now I regret buying the smallest media card for my Pearl (1gig). I should have bought a larger one! It's not my intention to ever use my phone as a video player, I'll get an mp3 player for that, but I have a lot of clips that I'd like to store on there for when I see various friends/family to share with them occasionally. Good tutorials on the net, as well as funny clips, etc.! <g>

    Thanks.

  6. or you may give WinFF (simple GUI for FFMpeg) a try which has four or five Blackberry profile, and further more you can customize Video Bitrate, Frame rate, size, aspect ratio, crop settings, In audio you can also set bit rate, sample rate and channels (2 for BB).
