  1. I recently bought a media player which plugs into my tv and allows me to view xvid and divx files via a usb stick. I have noticed that around half the files I own dont play any audio where the other half do.
Looking at the properties of the file the only difference I can see is that the ones that work have 2 channels (stereo) and the ones that dont have 5 channels.

Is there a way to reduce the number of channels to make the file (hopefully) play audio on my little (cheapo) media player?

    Thanks for your help,

    Dan

Try avi recomp. I think it can do this easily.

Or use avidemux, open avi, under video choose copy, under audio choose mp3. Save as an avi.

  3. I think I am missing something... With avidemux I use those settings and then end up with a file that has no audio at all. Selecting properties of this file in windows shows nothing where bitrate and channels were before.

And avi recomp im not sure even has any options to reduce the amount of channels in the video... saying that i cannot even see how to make the program start doings its converting

I had a similar problem with video and 5.1 audio.

It seems you have ac3 audio.

Using avidemux, open video file, under Video choose copy,
under Audio choose AC3 (I use AC3 (Aften)).
Then below Audio go to Filter>Mixer:
    change "No change" to "Stereo".

Set as same type as original under Format.
If file was an avi just press Save.

I use custom scripts with avidemux to process recordings from TV and
have added "app.audio.mixer("STEREO");" to all my scripts
to change the odd recording with 6 channel audio.

Later I found settings in my player (MVIX MX-760HD)
    that fixed the problem.
Set audio to 2 channels and enable 'Downmix' to convert
5.1 channel sound down to 2 channel sound

This was needed because my player was connected to my TV
    with Stereo RCA cables.
