  1. Hi, I'm editing with sony vegas pro and I'm having latency issues, i know that this won't completely solve the problem but i have been told that converting the h.264 video file into a format with a lower GOP with a program will greatly reduce the stress on my computer. Again, i know that i do need to get a computer but do to money restraints i can't do that *yet*. Could someone please tell me what is the best program (free or trial version preferably) that would convert mpeg4 into a format that has a lower GOP.
-Thanks for helping a poor loser,

  2. cineform neoscene has a free trial

Note just because you have all I-frame (GOP size =1), doesn't necessarily mean it will make editing any easier. For example lagarith is a form of lossless compression and is I-frame only, but slow as molasses to edit. The decoder has to be optimized, and multithreaded as well.

You can't, at least not very easily.

The specific decoder is specific to the format. e.g. lagarith would use the lagarith vfw decoder. Huffyuv would use the huffyuv vfw decoder in vegas.

Vegas uses Mainconcept decoder for h.264. You would have to re-program it, you can't swap 3rd party decoders for it. If you were able to re-program it and make it better, I'm sure you could sell it to Sony.

I suspect Vegas 10 will make editing of h.264 formats easier, and leverage the graphics card more, as the competition has already done so (Premiere Pro CS5, Edius)
