I have a movie that my friend wants me to send him. Can you send a 4GB file through something like Yahoo! Messenger or AIM? And if you can, about how fast is the transfer speed if both parties have road runner.

    No idea about Messenger.

I'd suggest using an FTP server, e.g. Cesar : http://www.aclogic.com/
    and sending the file directly.

Another way would be by using Teamviewer, http://www.teamviewer.com/index.aspx
a remote control app, which also has file transfer abilities.

Both these are free and offer fairly secure transfer. Make sure you set up passwords whatever you do.

y not just create your own torrent file and seed it to him with your favorite torrent client? I do it all the time.

I'll figure something out, I was basically looking for the fastest transfer speeds. I don't know how fast it would be with TeamViewer. I'll try the FTP server and see how that goes.

In the time you are wasting (and will waste further), you could have burned it to disc and sent it cheaply through mail.

I'm also going to go out on a (very thick) limb here and guess that it's a commercial movie that your friend can rent or buy himself.
