my superdrive has just been replaced under warranty. what was a matshita is now a HL-DR-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N.

the new GSA-S10N drive will not burn Verbatim DVD-R 16x discs in toast (i've tried toast 10 and old toast 6).

has anyone else experienced this problem ? or can you recommend another reliable disc i could use ?

i burned hundreds of these discs with toast in the old drive.

    thanks.

    ...

oops - not sure how i managed to wrote verbation in the thread title. of course i mean verbatim.

HL-DT-ST seems to be the brand identifier for Hitachi-LG Data Storage. Googling your model burner brings up many bad user reports. I suggest taking your Mac to a brick-and-mortar AppleStore/Apple Authorized Service Provider/Apple Authorized Distributor with a blank disc and let them try burn anything to DVD-R. They might have to replace the drive again.

It used to be that the thread starter can change the title/subject line, as it is/was part of the first post. Not sure if that was kept with the latest site overhaul.

Specs here on VideoHelp show that as an 8x burner. Have you tried slowing it down manually?

i was always of the understanding that it was ok to use faster rated disks even though the drive can't burn at that speed. as it happens, toast only gives me the option to burn at 4x, 8x or "best" speeds - i've tried all three to no avail.

buffer underrun prevention is checked, and the drive is able read previously burned 16x verbatim dvd-r's.

Of course it is OK....I never said anything about rated disc speed because you'd be hard pressed to find
and single layer media rated below 16x.

I don't do laptops and I don't do Macs.....but I do do LG drives and love them....sounds like you bought a crapper.
