Hi everyone, i am getting frustrated with this one. I am using the following setup.
Win2k SP2
655MB Ram
AMD 1GHz
36.4 GIG SCSI HDD 10000rpm
Radeon 64MB DDR VIVO
Aureal Sound Card
I am just trying to capture from the TV at present to see if i can hook this think up correctly. My input to the video card seems to be fine, i can capture video. But i never get any sound at all, i have my sound going into the "line in" on the sound card and i can hear it playing when i capture with the ATI multimedia center software.
The problem is when i play back the captured file there is no sound, this makes no sense at all. Has anyone run into this problem at all? I am at a loss, it seems that i should be able to capture the video and the sound at the same time. Even with other software i can only get the video without the sound, something has to be wrong somewhere but i cannot figure out where, anyone have any ideas?
Isn't it supposed to be easy to do captures with an easy setup like this?
Appreciate any help with this puzzling problem.
Thanks.

have you tried recording just sound it might be a setting you forgot. use windows sound recorder...

I have the same card has you:
Try this:
Close the ATI Video In.
Bring in the window Volume control (lower right corner of taskbar)
MUTE the line in
Restart the ATI video in (ATI task bar)
Do you hear sound?
- If not, your ATI is not configure properly. You need to specify to the ATI software where it should get is sound from. The trouble is I cant remember where in hell tha setting is (I have looked, didnt find it)
You could still capture with VirtualDub if you cant find it. In Vdub, you cant specify where it should take sound from, it just take whatever sound is currently playing. So just UNMUTE the line in to have sound in Vdub.
Gonna still try to find where the sound in parameter are in the ATI WDM settings...
FOUND IT!!!!
Start video in.
Right click on the image to bring the context menu
Select Setup
Goto the DISPLAY tab
Push the "INITIALISATION WIZARD"
After the country setting press NEXT
There it is: Audio input !!!!

resnullius, i am definitely going to try this when i get home later, this is driving me nuts. I could swear that i had all of this working at one time, but i really dont know what happened.
I think when i first set all of this up for dvd ripping, everything worked fine at the time cause i was still learning. Then i installed WinXP and never did bother to install any of the ripping or capturing software. Now that i want to do some capturing of cartoon shows there is no sound. I ended reinstalling Win2k just for the heck of it, but i think i am going back to XP later.
When i get home later i will try recording just the sound from sound recorder, i hope it works but if not i guess i am stuck. Whats funny is i can hear the sound playing from the "line in" and out the speakers, it just does not record.
Anyway let me see what happens later.
Thanks for the advice.

I had done this while i still had WinXP installed and i heard the sound playing, but after i recorded the file and played it there was no sound from the recorded file. All of my mp3's, mpeg files play with the sound, just not the ones i record. I will try different things when i get home and i will let you guys know what happened.
One quick question, some of you guys are using MMC 7.5, i have only used the 7.2 version from ATI. Do i need to use the 7.5 version? or whats the difference.
TIA -
Well, i tried everything and still no sound even though i can hear it playing through the speakers. I tried two different soundcards, i am thinking that there might be some incompatibility with the motherboard. I am using a Gigabyte GA7IXE4, i guess its about time to upgrade to that Athlon 2000 chip anyway.
I had heard that there were problems with gigabyte motherboards and the chipset, i am believing it now since i have had a little too many problems with all this multimedia stuff. -
Go to your system's volume control. START -->PROGRAMS
-->Accessories -->Entertaiment -->Volume control (in win2k at least) or bring up your sound card's mixer application. click options, properties, change adjust volume for RECORDING and hit ok. Is your line in slider all the way down?
Basically, what you want to do is change the record volume of the input device. Not just slide the playback device slider but the record device slider...
I spent hours scratching my head because I could hear the input from the TV but never record it. My line in record slider was at zero... -
you could try to plug it in your mic jack. if you actually record something that way it's that your sound settings are wrong and it's using your mic jack as record source... it wouldn't stop you from hearing what's coming through your line in...
-
check your sound countrol and make sure that you have line in checked for record and not something else this worked for me and it took me 3 weeks to get it

[I'm following this thread because it's similar to my poblem on everything older (All-in-wonder , original with Yamah DX-SG built-in to MB.)]
In my debug I found that that only external input on my sound is labeled "Microphone" in the volume control. ("Microphone is the selection I have to pic in Goldwave to successfully record audio as well.) However, "Microphone" is not an option in the ATI video player audio field either..
Is there a capture software that allows me to select "Microphone" for input?
