I would like to convert my DirecTv Receiver's S-Video output and send to my Samsung's Component Input because the only other possibility input is Antenna which is taken by my roof antenna. I have found a converter at http://www.svideo.com/svc2ypbpr.html but I cannot find any reviews and I'm not sure you can up-convert S-Video and actually get equal or better quality. Anyone have any ideas on this?

    What Samsung? Model number?

    What DirecTV receiver? Model number?

Well, I want to start off with a caveat: Both S-Video and Component are still ANALOG signals, and converting an analog signal to another analog signal is bound to have SOME loss. But my guess in this instance is that it would be EXTREMELY MINOR.

*NOTE: You WON'T get a better signal. You CAN'T get a better signal, unless you were to do some serious TBC+FrameSync+ProcAmp+NoiseReduction+Enhancement, and even then it depends and is debatable.

You best best is nearly EQUAL. From the ad, it looks like it might be.

What it's doing is splitting the Chroma signal (Svideo is YC, Y=luma and C=chroma) into the 2 chroma sub-signals (Y-R, Y-B). This is alot less work than that which needs to be done for Composite-Component (3d comb filtering to isolate the interleaved chroma from the luma, probably fixing color-under, plus the chroma splitting).

If there's a good warranty and returns policy, it sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

    Exactly.

When I had DirectTV, they offered a free upgrade from their crap box (it was pretty much mandatory) when they offered HD. To get HD, composite is the minimum.

Even if your television isn't HD, I doubt if any of the cable/satellite/FiOS boxes made in the last couple-few years don't have composite and/or HDMI out.

It's a Samsung SyncMaster P2370HD with the following 4 inputs: Antenna; HDMI; A/V (Composite-yellow), Component, but NO S-Video (darn). My DirecTv Receiver is a Standard model D11 and has 3 outputs: antenna; composite (the yellow I think); S-video. I'm using it's A/V output right now but I'm hoping for a better picture with some kind of hardware that would do S-Video to perhaps Component conversion. I can't upgrade to a better HD 3 bulb antenna because this is on a trailer DataStorm dish that has a dual purpose of Hughes Internet & DirecTv which folds down to the deck.

Just use composite. The Y/C separator in the Samsung is good. S-Video won't look much better. Both are standard def.

Get an HD DirecTV tuner box if you want a better picture.

    deDV,
Ahh, had not thought of that .... so a HD DirecTv Receiver box would give me a better picture over my standard box even though I do NOT have the new 3 bulb arm and new dish?? Or do I have to spring for the new dish hardware too?

The composite really IS not that bad ..... is just that I made this investment and I'm being looked at with furrowed eyebrows ..... :^))))

I'm not familiar with the current Dish/ Direct TV hardware compatibility. But the HD boxes have analog component and HDMI connections.

Thanks edDV. When we get home I'll disconnect my HD box in the house and see if it works in the RV. Appreciate all the replies.
