There are a number of BR to mkv programs that will convert a BR to mkv without resizing but except for Makemkv I have not found any programs that will convert a dvd to mkv without any additional processing.
I've downloaded just about everything to convert dvd to mkv but all want to change the audio and re-encode the video.

What will convert a dvd to mkv much like creating an iso from a dvd.

    What is wrong with makemkv?

I don't think there are any others.

  3. rip your dvd as 1 file (e.g. 1 vob, 1 mpg) , rewrap with mkvtoolnix

Nothing wrong with Makemkv usually. Sometimes it has a problem with something. Last problem was with converting a dvd with extras. the extras had a 192 ac3 audio but makemkv keep showing it as having no audio. I ended up converting the extra to an iso with DVdShrink and it played fine. But, I was wondering if there was an alternative just for those few occasions.

Thank you for the suggestion. I hadn't seen any info indicating that MKVtoolnix would process anything other than mkvs. I use it all the time but it never dawned on me to use it with anything other than mkvs.

I just stuck the vob file from the extras into MKVmerge and within 30 seconds I had a working MKV.

I went back to the tools section because I remembered that a new version of MKVToolNix was listed on the front page so I clicked it and read the verbiage re: mkvtool nix just in case I had missed something. Nope, no mention of working with anything other than MKVs.

"MKVtoolnix is a set of tools to create, alter, split, join and inspect Matroska files(mkv)."
Easy to overlook perhaps, but it wouldn't be much use for creation if it only accepted other mkv's as input.

  7. If MKVmerge only accepted MKV files as input, one might wonder how MKV files were produced in the first place...

If you look at this container comparison chart on Wikipedia it says for Matroska in the 'video formats supported' and 'audio formats converted' columns 'virtually anything'.

I have not found that MKVtoolNix will accept ts streams. In fact trying to import a ts or m2ts gives the error message that :

"The file is an unsupported container format (ts)"

As for those asking about how MKV files would be created in the first place...Lots of encoding programs will create mkvs as well as 2 rippers Makemkv and Fab. Once they are created MKVToolNix will work with them. I did find that non ts streams can be imported (mpeg as well as vob)

The only program that I have found that will accept ts streams and convert them to MKV is BluRip. It's not a ripper. It's much like TSMuxer but it will accept ts streams and save them as MKV.
