  1. I have an old avi file which Ive needed to rejoin to play-unfortunately I do not remember what program was used to split the video originally. after using hjsplit to join it back together again, it only works in vlc, and its properties tab is now missing. it no longer works on my devices that can run avi, and all fail to recognise the format. its not a windows system issue as the properties tab works with other files of the exact same format. it would seem that after rejoining the file, the properties tab info has been erased (or become no longer available), and so there is no way for most video programs to run the file. most video scanners, eg gspot recognise the avi's file "name" as MPEG-4, but the codec section is blank. the file extension has always been avi. I have tried changing the file extension to ".mp4" as a test, but that makes no difference in playing. It used to work as an avi before splitting (VLC recognises it as using a divx codec), and its always had the ".avi" file extension. The only other video info gspot gives out is "Codec Status Undetermined" and "MPEG Elementary Video", with a set resolution, frame count and keyframe distance. all other fields are blank.

In windows if I right click and select properties on the avi, it simply states "unavailable for selected source". Is there a way to regain or create new property information for the avi? Perhaps only then the file will play again. I cant convert the avi to avi (as a test to regain properties) as software wont recognise it as an avi at all, even though it definately is a divx/mp4. any ideas on how to add new new information regarding its format so that the property tab will then show and the file will play properly again on all avi players? thanks

  2. did you have 2 avi files that you joined into 1? were they ok to begin with?

if so, use vdub file=>append in direct stream copy mode , or avidemux

hopefully you didn't erase the "originals"

  3. it was just one avi video, was split into two, then rejoined using a different rejoiner. the extension for the files were originally "avi.0", "avi.1", I had to rename them to "avi.001" and "avi.002" to make them work with hjsplit. the file plays fine in vlc, but thats all it does play in. no properties tab at all, so no programs can understand that its just a divx/avi.

i think the only problem it has is that i used a different program to rejoin, but im certain it was fine before in playing and showing its own properties info with resolution/format type etc. aside from having an ".avi" extension, vlc classes it as having a divx codec, thats the only way i knew, since gspot didnt state divx, only "mpeg-4" for video name. its a family video which was sent, if the original wasnt divx/avi then my relative probably converted it from whatever format mobiles/digicams used at the time (five yrs ago i class as old, lol). ive no idea how to view/refresh its properties tab so it will work.

edit :- I found the program I originally used to split on a backup disc, it was called "hacha", a very basic tool I used before I knew about hjsplit. I made backups of "avi.0" etc the other day, so when I tried the tool today, it did the job and joined the files fine. I can now see the video properties when I right click. Ill just have to remember if I have "avi.0" files I must use hacha, and if I have "avi.001" etc I must use hjsplit. thanks
