My cd/dvd drive went bad, and I need to replace it I opened the computer case and seen that there are no gray flat ribbon cables. What type of drive do I need?

you have 2 basic choices, ide or sata. ide would be the big 40 pin cable - sata is the much smaller cable. remove the drive and it should have a label that says either ide or sata. --
