    Hi,
I am trying to Encode a video file (in VOB format, 4:3 aspect ratio) to AVI file. The original VOB file is a full screen video, with size as 720x480. I am using AutoGK for my conversion process. There are no black bars in my VOB file. If I try to convert the VOB to AVI, AutoGK automatically takes up resolutions like 720x544 means it will increasing it's height automatically.. Is it ok? because original source has height as 480.

Even if I decrease the width to 656, even then height is at 496 (e.g AutoGK takes the resolution as 656x496) again indicating an increase in height from the original source.

But if I take the width as 640, then I get the resolution as 640x480 and in that case the height is remaining the same. But isn't the decrease in width from 720 to 640 too much if the height remains the same?

Kindly suggest which resolution should I go for. thanks in advance

  2. If you're making the AVI for a specific size (like 700 MB or 1400 MB), then it's best that you allow AutoGK to choose the width so it can get the best quality for the size you choose. If you're running single passes for a target quality percentage and don't care about the final size, then it doesn't really matter how you set the width, but there's nothing wrong with setting the width for 640.

It has to be resized as 720x480 (a ratio of 1.5:1) isn't the final output ratio when being played as a DVD. A 4:3 DVD automatically gets resized by the player to some 1.33:1 ratio, one such as 640x480. An AVI is often resized while being encoded.
