I have a Phillips DVP5980/5 Dvd player with Upscaling and a Samsung LE37B650 Full HD 1080P LCD Television 37 and when i try play a rented Dvd thru Hdmi i get Displayed connection non hdcp compliant and that picture goes black and just get the sound,Tv is Hdcp compliant and i have updated the dvd player to latest firmware but still no luck am i doing something wrong? Its annoying as i waan be able to upscale dvds when i watch them,i have no probs upscaling divx movies.
    Any ideas?

Disconnect all electrical power from both DVD player and TV for 5 minutes. Then plug everything back in and try again. Sometimes a simple reset will do the trick. I have had similar problems, and that was the solution.

It's not the Philips, it's the Samsung LCD TV. I have a Samsung LCD HDTV too. Some of their models are well known for losing HDCP sync and giving errors. I used to have this problem all the time with my Toshiba HD DVD player and my TV. I disconnected the Toshiba player some time ago, but if I remember correctly I think if I powered on the player before I switched the TV input to it, the HDCP sync always worked.

Honestly, Samsung's TVs are well known for their excellent upscaling, so you're probably really not missing out on anything in reality by just letting the TV do the upscaling. What did you pay more for - the TV or the DVD player? Now which one logically do you think should have the better upscaler? (Hint - it just might be the one that cost more)

  5. You might also try a different HDMI cable. I have a Philips DVP-5980 and a Samsung LNT-4665 and have never seen an HDMI/HDCP problem between them.

Sorry. I assumed you knew more about this. Whatever your TV's native resolution is, be that 720 or 1080, it will upscale EVERYTHING it gets as input to that resolution. So if you send, say, 480i or 480p from DVD player to it, the TV will upscale that for you.

I guess it could be the cable, but I think that is unlikely. Like I said I had this issue all the time with my HD DVD player and my TV and I'm using the exact same cable on a BluRay player now and I don't remember seeing this issue with my BluRay player. I'm sure it's a Samsung issue. Again, try turning on the Philips BEFORE you turn on the TV input and I believe that will fix the problem.

  10. Also, remember that modern electronics aren't really off when when you turn them off with the remote. You may have to unplug the power cord to really reboot the hardware.

  12. Try the DVD player on another TV. Try another DVD player (or another HDMI device) on this TV. If both are working then they just don't like each other and one will have to be replaced.
